HELLO ARCHITECTURE

DE / COTU Berlin, 2019

As inspiration for “Hello architecture” we draw on a programming tutorial developed by Brian Kernighan in 1974: the so-called “Hello, World!” program, a small computer program that was meant to show in the simplest possible way which components are necessary for a complete program in a programming language, how they work, and to offer a first glimpse of the syntax.

“Hello Architecture” transfers this approach to architectural education: we develop architectural exercises and methods that turn architecture itself into a didactic tool. We set out in search of systems of order and principles. We train ourselves to understand and question architectural phenomena and concepts so that we can ultimately arrive at our own decisions beyond familiar conventions. Our architectural discourse begins with the polarization of observations, that is, the formation of oppositions.
