ACCESSIBILITY
With Berlin’s growing population, the district of Tegel faces a responsibility to protect and reimagine endangered spaces. „Accessibility“ represents more than just a physical transformation, it’s about breaking boundaries, fostering inclusion, and creating new opportunities for shared spaces.
By connecting diverse housing types, institutions, and generations, the goal is to build a dynamic and welcoming environment for all members of society. These „Accessibility“ spaces are strategically placed at existing social hubs, locations where significant institutions or high-activity areas converge. They provide a home for associations, institutions, and clubs that are under threat, displaced, or currently lacking visibility, restoring their importance in the community. „Accessibility“ becomes a unifying space, encouraging interaction and connections between different building types and the people who live and work in the area.
Each „Accessibility“ serves a primary function tailored to the needs of the surrounding neighborhood. This approach creates needed space for institutions that are either struggling or overcrowded, such as women’s centers or youth clubs. For instance, the „Generation Tower“ expands the capacity of the nearby senior center and also includes residential units, demonstrating how these spaces can be multi-functional. Meanwhile, the rooftop garden offers a versatile retreat, divided into a promenade and observation deck, allotments for urban gardening, and additional areas for community programs housed within the towers.
